Vieux Château Certan was founded in 1745 by Jean Demay de Certan, a wine merchant. It is one of the oldest wineries in the Pomerol region of Bordeaux and was rated as one of the best wineries in Pomerol in its early years. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a Belgian wine merchant, took over the winery and it continues to be run by his family today. Georges Thienpont used a very special and eye-catching pink bottle seal for his wine, which is still used today. A great feature.

Vieux Château Certan is located in the highlands of Pomerol, close to Petrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The vineyard covers an area of 14 hectares and consists of 23 plots, each of which is managed individually according to the soil type, the grape varieties planted and the age of the vines: the clay soil part is mainly planted with Merlot (70%), gravel The clay soil is planted with Cabernet Franc (25 %) and the gravel part is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5 %). The average age of the vineyards is 50 years, and these old vines, combined with the favorable influence of the microclimate of the Pomerol Highlands, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect ripeness. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak vats, with fermentation temperature regulated at 28°C to ensure a gentle, controlled extraction. Vieux Château Certan is an elegant style of Pomerol red wine. The wine is rich and round, exuding aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, flowers, chocolate and spices. The texture is described as silky and velvety, making it very easy to drink, but it also has excellent complexity and aging potential.

====================

Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 - the bouquet absolutely prances out of the glass with stunning scents of candied violets, chocolate-covered cherries, roses and eucalyptus over a core of black plum preserves, mulberries, black raspberries and blueberry pie plus wafts of licorice, iron ore and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic balance and expression, with very fine-grained, silt-like tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing with epic length and perfume. .- Robert Parker
