Chateau de Beaucastel is one of the most prestigious wineries in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, with a history dating back to 1549. Over the years, its high-quality wines have garnered accolades from numerous renowned wine critics; Hommage à Jacques Perrin has received a perfect score of 100 points from Wine Advocate on five occasions. Chateau de Beaucastel has been a pioneer in organic farming, implementing organic cultivation practices as early as the 1950s and transitioning to biodynamic methods in 1974.
Beaucastel's grapes are all handpicked and meticulously selected, with only the highest quality grapes used for winemaking. The winemaking process involves fermenting in large vats at a controlled temperature for 15 days, followed by aging in oak barrels. They use 13 different grape varieties to be vinified separately, each showcasing unique characteristics, and then blended together to create the perfect flavor profile. Beaucastel emphasizes the art of blending, resulting in their wines often having a high level of complexity. After the winemaking process is complete, the wine ages in barrels for a year, gradually maturing, and then is stored in the cellar for another year. Mourvedre is an ancient grape variety that has been used since Beaucastel's inception. Due to its high level of difficulty in cultivation, many wineries have stopped growing it, but Beaucastel persists in using this grape, which imparts a unique flavor to their wines.
====================
The 2017 vintage has a deep color. The pure and elegant nose suggests cherries, blackcurrants, spices, with floral notes, aromatic herbs (Bayleaf) and chocolate. The mouth is elegant, the tannins are ripe and fine, beautifully dense and concentrated structure, a seductive velvety texture enhanced with finely spicy fruit. The finish is long, held by elegant and coated tannins, harmonious and very persistent (fruit, spice, floral notes). A great vintage!
