Chateau Palmer is located in Margaux, a famous wine village in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, France. Chateau Palmer now has 66 hectares of vineyards spread over the hills of the town of Contenac. The main part of the vineyard is concentrated on a barren gravel plateau formed by the Quaternary glacial period, which is also the highest point of the Margaux hills. Due to its location on a hillside with several meters of gravel, the soil is composed of brittle black lydite, white and yellow quartz, mixed with black, green and blue silica and white chalcedony. The vineyard is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, with an average age of 38 years. The estate uses biological methods for pest control and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand. In order to maximize the benefits of the grapes from this gravel soil, the winery maintains a high grape planting density - 10,000 plants / hectare, while regularly ploughing the land to promote competition among the grape plants, so that the root system of the grape plants Grows deep into the soil. The average yield of the vineyards is 4,500 litres/ha.

Alter Ego de Palmer was introduced in 1998 as a stylistically different counterpart to the grand vin, rather than a second wine. It is more fruit-forward than the grand vin, and is made to be approachable in its first few years after bottling. The previous second wine, La Réserve du Général, is no longer made, and any components which would previously have gone into it are now sold off in bulk. Annual production is around 12,000 cases of Chateau Palmer and 7500 cases of Alter Ego.

=====================

Aromas of sweet cherries, raspberries, berry fruit liqueur, licorice and spices introduce the 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine with lively acids, melting tannins and a lavish core of ripe, creamy fruit. It's more immediate than the more muscular, powerful grand vin.
